Push Yourself

I strive to push myself in everything I do. One thing I suggest is that whatever you are into or like or are good at, strive to push yourself harder. Many people will tell you that I'm the math genius in our school, and I agree. In eighth grade I realized I was excellent at math and was able and willing to help others. So, I pushed myself. I tutored a fifth grade girl that year in math and English. Then, I realized that was also easy so I pushed myself harder. Freshman year I went to Michigan State University for Algebra One and Algebra Two. That I struggled with but pushed myself through. So, the next summer after freshman year, I taught myself Geometry in Four Weeks. I remember getting up at 5:00am everyday at Band Camp to study for an hour and a half. I passed that easily so I took Precalculus as a Sophomore, this is a Junior or Senior class. I was the only sophomore to do this. I passed that class with flying colors so I pushed myself even harder Junior Year and took AP Calculus as the only Junior in the class. I bet you could guess how I did! Now, this past year I have spent more than half of my day at Lansing Community College studying Calculus Two and Calculus Three. And I will continue to push myself till I get my degree.
This however, is not the only thing I push myself in. I will also be described as a Christian or a religious person, which is exactly what I am. My faith started when I was really young. Now as a high-schooler I push myself to know more about God and what makes me and my faith different from other religions and their faiths. In the summer of 2014, I went to New York City on a missions trip to share the gospel in a diverse community. I learned that you can share your faith just by who you are and how you do stuff. I also learned you can fit thirty people in a fifteen passenger vehicle when there is torrential downpour and those thirty people only speak Spanish and you are trying to get directions to their house! (But that's a side note!) Also, this year I will be pushing my faith by going to Puerto Rico. So far, I have pushed my faith because our team was supposed to go to Alaska, which is now far from the truth. Therefore, I suggest you find what you love and are good at and strive to push yourself in those areas. Whether it be sports, band, religion, or academics, push yourself to be your best and more. |
Work for what you want
I can bet that those of you reading this have always been told to work for what you want. However, I'm gonna tell you a different version. My dreams have always been to travel the world and help others. These dreams are hard to achieve, yet just in high school, I've done this! I took what I loved doing and what I value my time in and took it to New York City and Laingsburg! Now, you might say, "But you live in Laingsburg, you can't take helping others to Laingsburg". I disagree, if you want to help people, start in your community, make the world a better place at home, then go out to the rest of the world. Traveling the world might seem fun to do, but if you don't come home to see what you have versus others who suffer from poverty, sickness, death, etcetera, then you will not be able to see the freedoms we have, the free water we have, the health technology advances we have, etcetera. I feel that whatever you want to do, it can be molded into your career. I have personally wanted to help wounded warriors in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Iran, therefore, I got interested in a career that would make this possible. I invested my academics in high school to help get a college degree faster. I will be going to
Michigan Technological University for Biomedical Engineering, (making prosthetics). This will help me get my degree and move into the field, then later in life help our veterans return to a normal life after serving our country and maybe even traveling the world.
So, find what you want in life and form it into something you can do. The cliche phrase is, "Do what you love, and Love what you do"!

This is a poem I wrote this past year in AP Literature and Composition. I was inspired by the spring air and the beautiful flowers beginning to sprout up!
