Before you begin reading the novels, you will complete a brief project researching background information necessary for understanding of the complexities of the text. All literature should be read in the context of the time period to really understand characters, their motivations, and their circumstances.

2. The history of slavery in the US, with the focus on the 19th century (1800's) and the treatment of the runaway slaves. 3. Discuss the controversy over "Huck Finn" - introduce the opposing points of view, the rationale behind each one. 4. Review irony (verbal, situational and structural), research satire. Explain how they differ. Research literary criticism that explores these topics in relation to Huck Finn (Huck Finn-a satire that employs a lot of irony). Establish and explain the significance of the novel as a satirical work of literature. |
